Ghosts to Carry, Stories to Keep

Where memory meets the page, one moment at a time.

2–4 minutes

The Candle Between Us

You glanced at the clock and smiled.

“I should really go.”

I wanted you to stay, but I knew you were right.

The candle had burned low.
Two cups on the table.
A plate that had held biscuits, empty.

You’d already stayed longer than you should have,
a long drive ahead into the winter night.

You wrapped the huge scarf around your neck,
pulled on your knitted hat,
and together we made our way downstairs
from my fourth-floor mieszkanie kawalerskie.

Outside, the cold caught us immediately.

I’d left my coat upstairs.

Your little blue Fiat stood beyond the streetlamp,
parked where the darkness began.

We lingered a moment longer,
not because there was anything left to say,
but because neither of us seemed eager
for the evening to end.

You climbed inside.
The engine turned over.

I stepped back into the chill.

You waved once, then again through the windscreen.

A yellow bus passed.

Your brake lights, almost blinding red.
An indicator flashing.

Then you were gone, heading towards the brighter streets,
towards the edge of the city and the road home.

For a moment I stood in the cold you left behind.

Back through the entrance.
Up four flights of stairs.

The familiar sound of the radiator ticking.
My coat draped over the chair.
Two empty cups.

The faint smell of smoke
from the candle I’d extinguished ten minutes before.

I looked at the table and smiled.

Then sighed, and lit it again.

The flame steadied itself.

I sat and watched it.

The radiator ticked somewhere behind me.

The flat had grown quiet again.

For a while I simply sat there,
thinking of the road ahead of you,
and willing you a safe journey home.

Somewhere beyond Gliwice,
you were still driving.

Then your text message.

Hej, w domu… dobranoc. kcbtzt.

Wsiadłaś do samochodu.

Silnik zaskoczył.

Cofnąłem się o krok w chłód.

Pomachałaś raz, a potem jeszcze raz przez przednią szybę.

Przejechał żółty autobus.

Twoje światła stopu zapłonęły niemal oślepiającą czerwienią.

Mignął kierunkowskaz.

Potem odjechałaś,
w stronę jaśniejszych ulic,
ku granicom miasta i drodze do domu.

Przez chwilę stałem w chłodzie, który po sobie zostawiłaś.
Potem wróciłem do środka.

Z powrotem w środku.
Cztery piętra schodów.

Znajomy odgłos tykającego kaloryfera.
Mój płaszcz przewieszony przez krzesło.
Dwie puste filiżanki.

Słaby zapach dymu
ze świecy, którą zgasiłem dziesięć minut wcześniej.

Spojrzałem na stół i uśmiechnąłem się.

Potem westchnąłem i zapaliłem ją ponownie.

Płomień uspokoił się.

Siedziałem i patrzyłem.

Kaloryfer tykał gdzieś za mną.

Mieszkanie znów ucichło.

Przez chwilę po prostu tam siedziałem,
myśląc o drodze przed tobą
i w duchu życząc ci bezpiecznego powrotu.

Gdzieś za Gliwicami
wciąż prowadziłaś.

Potem przyszedł twój SMS.
Hej, w domu… dobranoc. kcbtzt.
